Rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep or REMS) is a unique phase of sleep in mammals and birds, characterized by random rapid movement of the eyes, accompanied by low muscle tone throughout the body, and the propensity of the sleeper to dream vividly.
The REM phase is also known as paradoxical sleep (PS) and sometimes desynchronized sleep because of physiological similarities to waking states, including rapid, low-voltage desynchronized brain waves.
REM sleep loss is associated with increased inflammatory responses, increased risk for obesity, and memory problems. Patients with sleep apnea, which may be associated with a complete loss of REM sleep, are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression.
If you think you can live without dreams, you are completely wrong. Dreams are just as important a function as any. Without dreams, you will ultimately lose your sanity.
REM sleep is the level of brain wave activity at which one dreams. We have to dream in order to survive. If one doesn’t reach REM sleep, one won’t be able to dream and will eventually begin to lose his/her cognitive abilities. It will lead to a stage where one will find it hard to concentrate.
Even the most common tasks start to seem difficult after a certain amount of time. It’s not that it would affect every individual in exactly the same way or at the same rate, but it will happen to almost everyone.
REM sleep comprises about 20 to 25 percent of total sleep in typical healthy adults. NREM sleep and REM sleep continue to alternate through the night in a cyclical fashion.
One might think that one doesn’t dream, but everyone does. Some people just don’t remember their dreams.
Dreams are the most essential part of your sleep. Without dreams, there will eventually be no reality.
Not being able to dream is almost the same as not sleeping at all. There is only a certain amount of time you can live without sleep.
Eventually, one will suffer from hallucinations, paranoia, fatigue, etc.
To maintain one’s sanity and mental-health, one has to dream and everyone does. People who state that they do not dream at all, just don’t remember their dreams.
