The term “Eclecticism” means the practice of deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.
Eclecticism is a conceptual approach that does not hold rigidly to a single paradigm or set of assumptions, but instead draws upon multiple theories, styles, or ideas to gain complementary insights into a subject, or applies different theories in particular cases.
It can sometimes seem inelegant or lacking in simplicity, and eclectics are sometimes criticized for lack of consistency in their thinking. It is, however, common in many fields of study. For example, most psychologists accept certain aspects of behaviorism, but do not attempt to use the theory to explain all aspects of human behavior.
Eclecticism in ethics, philosophy, and religion is also known as syncretism.
In simpler words, it means giving every theory, using every idea, trying every possible thing, and basically, just throwing stones at a wall and waiting to see which one sticks.
And how could you really accept something that is mostly used in fields like philosophy, psychology, ethics and RELIGION!
It’s like saying, Covid-19 is a man-made virus, a naturally existing virus, a virus made by aliens, and every other damn theory one can cook up and waiting to see which one sticks. And when it is proved to be one of the 100 (which it obviously will), then going out there and saying, look, I was right!
Yes, of course you were. A broken clock is right twice a day!
But people hale the Eclectics over the Eccentrics. And that is the entire problem with our world.
People don’t want to open their minds to odd and unconventional ideas. But they are all good with thousands of theories concerning one particular topic just because it gives them a choice to believe what they like.
And eccentrics are considered to be the odd ones out. And that is why we can never fit into the society. We are socially awkward. Yes! But it’s not like we were given a choice.
Whenever we give a theory or idea based on sheer observations, calculations and facts, we are sidelined and termed as crazy!
But when an eclectic says, this thing could be happening because of (1000 different reasons) any of the given reasons without any particular proof and eligibility, he is considered to be the saviour.
Sometimes (most of the times), a person like that is also made the President or Prime Minister.
P.S. Eclecticism might be a good thing, but only if it is confined to the field of art. Don’t! I repeat. Don’t bring it into Science! It will be catastrophic.
